Pinili is one of the youngest and smallest town of the province. It is often referred to as “Selected Refuge of Liberty.” It lies in the southern portion of the province 29.60 kilometers southeast of Laoag City. It is bounded by four municipalities, namely: Batac on the north, Currimao on the northwest, Badoc on the southwest and Nueva Era on the east.

It has two seasons, the wet and the dry. The wet or rainy season occurs during the month of May to the early days of October, while the dry season happens during the rest of the year.

Infrastructure Development.

The fast development of the town is attributed to the concerted efforts of the people. Roads and bridges, including drainage canals in the poblacion, are already constructed. The old town hall on top of a hill was replaced by a concrete one. Elementary and secondary school buildings were constructed and repaired which was made possible by the national and local government.

The public plaza was beautified and is now considered the most beautiful plaza in the province. In the rural barangays, roads were widened, constructed, repaired and maintained. Under the Rural Development Corporation (RDC), the Pinili-Nueva Era road was constructed and some others are still being built, with assistance coming from the national and provincial government

Economic Development.

Farming is one of the sources of livelihood of the people. Farmers produce rice, tobacco, sugarcane, maguey and vegetables. They concentrate on planting tobacco, because it commands a high price. Meanwhile, garlic is also a promising crop. This is produce in large amounts every planting season. Vegetables like eggplant, pepper, string beans and mungo are also produced to augment the people’s income.

The thick forest that surrounds the municipality is an additional source of income. During summer, fruits like duhat, siniguelas and camangeg are gathered and sold in local markets.

Women who migrated from Paoay make towels, blankets and bathrobes for sale. Livestock raising is also an industry. Farmers raise goats and cattle for some consumption and for sale.

About Pinili

Geography

Pinili is one of the youngest and smallest towns of the province. It is often referred to as “Selected Refuge of Liberty”. It lies in the southern portion of the province 38 kilometers southeast of Laoag city. It is bounded by four municipalities namely: Batac on the north, Currimao on the north-west, Badoc on the southwest and Nueva Era on the east.

Town History

Pinili was established as a town on January 1, 1920 by virtue of EO No. 92, s.1919, which was signed by the governor general on December 20, 1919. The place was formerly covered by a thick forest where wild animals abound. In 1920, at the height of the Filipino-American War, the rebel priest, Monsignor Gregorio Aglipay, fled to the thick forest with several of his men and formed his sandatahan, to fight against the Americans who invaded the province. The Filipino soldiers under his command were weak in military tactics and almost outnumbered by the enemies. To protect soldiers from the attack of the invaders, Msgr. Aglipay ordered some of his men to climb the tallest tamarind tree on top of the hill to watch for the coming of the American forces. When the watchers saw that there was something unusual they reported it to the hiding soldiers, so that they would be ready to fight. This was how the place was used during the war. For protection, the priest ordered the settlers to build their houses nearer to each other. There were three factors that made Pinili (means selected) the name of the town: 1. General Gregorio Aglipay selected it as the place of refuge for his army; 2. The place was inhabited only by selected people; and 3. The place was chosen as the site of the poblacion because of its historical value.
Population

Pinili is a 5th class municipality in the Province of Ilocos Norte, Philippines. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 15,903 people in 3,172 households.

Water color and play with the 'kins

The slide show is that of my 'kins (nieces and nephews) doing water color and playing in the fields at the height of an afternoon burning sun. So they played until the evening running around and spraying other kids with their water gun.

Beautiful, handsome and naughty too...

Some of the shots here were taken by Grace or was it Emon, I forgot already who took and played with the camera, some are nice shots though, especially those close up of Isis. Some of the shots were taken when they bought fishballs. Ryla was missing in most of the scenes, she was too shy and aloof perhaps to play with her cousins.

Birthday Co-celebration of Ayen and Nom

I was very fortunate to be back in the country when Ayen and Nom celebrated their birthday (June 6, 2008). Jovie and Ryla were also present coming from Nueva Viscaya with a cousin who brought Raq's gift for tatay and nanay. It was not what I was expecting though. I was hoping for a cozy and intimate family gathering but it turned out to be a barangay (village) celebration. Not only our relatives came but also neighbors who in away our extended relatives.

Cousins and relatives were mobilized.

The menfolks until late night had drinking with a videoke blaring ( the company that put together songs and videos is a Korean company - hello noraebangs {Korean singing bars}).

A pig was butchered. The meat was cooked in different ways igado, an Ilocano dish that is always present in any padaya/ram-rambak (celebrations)

A goat came in next for the kinilaw ( raw goat's meat seasoned with vinegar and spices), caldereta and the famous Ilocano cuisine papaitan (meat and innards cooked with bile or those liquified- digested almost to become excrement of the goat that makes the dish exotic and ma-pait/bitter).

The women folks came to prepare the veggies, clean the rice, prepare the utensils and later on wash the dishes.

An so we ate, had fun and parlor games.

I've heard again after so loooong time (felt so sentimental hearing the song I would hear when celebrating bdays in Ilocos as a kid) "pada-padakam a kumablaaw" (all gathered here to great you happy birthday). One of the highlights of the singing is the crowning and giving of flowers to the celebrators.

The affair was ended with Ayen giving gifts to her well-wishers.

Last Christmas Family Fotos (2007)

It took Cely ages to post these beautiful photos of our nieces and nephews taken during her 2007 Christmas holiday. Busy with her last year in class at least she made it to be part of her Nursing Class Graduation (we are happy for her - wrote an article about this in my other blog with this link http://twurl.nl/bmt30k ). These fotos are also posted in our friendster group.

Amon-ra is crying while the rest are all focused to the camera.

These 'kins (pamangkin - nephews and nieces) are so challenging to contain, a crowd-management team is needed to hold their attention for the camera. So these "Kodak-moments" of them are indeed precious to click and snap their portrait. Watch their antics and other gimmicks. From left with ball is grace, ayen, yanna, isis, eman, vj (and cousin), andre and emon.

I could just imagine shouts, coaching and bribing to tell to behave and keep still.

Akala ng mga tao na nasa Pilipinas kapag nasa America ka akala nila madami ka ng pera. Ang totoo, madami kang utang, dahil credit card lahat ang gamit mo sa pagbili mo ng mga gamit mo. Kailangan mo gumamit ng credit card para magka-credit history ka, kase pag hindi ka umutang o wala kang utang, hindi ka pagkakatiwalaan ng mga kano. Pag wala kang credit card, ibig sabihin wala kang kapasidad magbayad.

Akala nila mayaman ka na kase may kotse ka na. Ang totoo, kapag hindi ka bumili ng kotse sa America maglalakad ka ng milya-milya sa ilalim ng init ng araw o kaya sa snow. Walang jeepney, tricycle o padyak sa America.

Akala nila masarap ang buhay dito sa America. Ang totoo, puro ka trabaho kase pag di ka nagtrabaho, wala kang pangbayad ng bills mo sa kotse, credit card, ilaw, tubig, insurance, bahay at iba pa. Hindi ka na pwedeng tumambay sa kapitbahay kase busy din sila maghanap buhay pangbayad ng bills nila.

Akala nila masaya ka kase nagpadala ka ng picture mo sa Disney, Seaworld, Six Flags, Universal Studios at iba pang attractions. Ang totoo, kailangan mo ngumiti kase nagbayad ka ng $70+ para makarating ka dun, kailangan mo na naman ang 10 hours na sweldo mong pinangbayad sa ticket.

Akala nila malaki na ang kinikita mo kase dolyar na sweldo mo. Ang totoo, malaki pagpinalit mo ng peso, pero dolyar din ang gastos mo sa America. Ibig sabihin, ang dolyar mong kinita sa presyong dolyar mo din gagastusin. Ang P15.00 na sardinas sa Pilipinas $1.00 sa America, ang isang pakete ng sigarilyo sa pilipinas P 40.00, sa America $6.50, ang upa mo sa bahay na P 10,000 sa pilipinas, sa America $1,000++.

Akala nila buhay milyonaryo ka na kase ang ganda ng bahay at kotse mo. Ang totoo milyon ang utang mo. Ang bago mong kotse 5 taon mong huhulugan. Ang bahay 30 taon mong huhulugan. Ibig sabihin, alipin ka ng bahay at kotse mo.

Rahon-Erlano Family Tree On-line

Today I made an online family tree for Rahon-Erlano folks. Well I can't fill the info, i forgot the names of the sons of my auncles and aunts and their children so I hope they found out about it and so they get to correct it. The last time I was at the Archive of the Mormons - 5 years ago and was searching my relatives and found some of them - tracing back the Rahon lineage takes me to the early 1900's but of course the surname was changed and saw its transformation through out time I was told. The Erlano though - I was not able to fully gather all the info. Well you ought to check the birth certificates and death certificates - validate them - it was really a puzzzling experience but it was a good hunting games viewing microfilms and other documents. Now it is available on-line thanks to geni.com.

I never thought they too could be political! I wonder how and where they learned the slogan given that they are too far from the crowd and scenes of Liwasan, Plaza Miranda or Mendiola.

I admire them though. I hope they really become revolutionary when they grow up - bringing change and transformation for a better Philippines and a better world...

One of my favorite pictures of my 'kins (pamangkin) this summer of 2006. It was so hard to ask them to sit down for a photo session. I managed to snap as much as I could why they were settling down. Two of the kins were not here Ryla and Krishna.

Now aside from their presence on the blog they could be found now on then Yahoo Time Capsule. I hope they get a chance to see if for themselves and realize that hope - A Better World for Them and their next generation.

Time Capsule Artist's Statement

A tradition as old as cave art, one of the most primal human traits is the need for self-expression. We make drawings and paintings, take photos, sing songs, write stories and poems, keep blogs, build and decorate houses, buy and wear clothing, write memoirs. We do these things to become individuals, to fight anonymity and the passage of time.

These days, life is lived in short bursts. We dart madly from the house to the car to the train to the office. We check email, voicemail, headlines, and stocks. We absorb web sites, TV, radio, music, movies and gossip, desperately try to keep up. We maintain this crazy pace, tumbling through our 80 years, obsessed with the present, rarely pausing to consider the full arc of life, much less the arc of many lives, lived across many generations. As we dash through our days, expressing ourselves in countless ways, leaving thick trails of footprints, we seldom stop and think about those footprints. We rarely consider the legacy we are leaving behind. But what if we did? What if we were each to choose a small handful of precious thoughts and artifacts to represent our life – a few words, a few pictures, perhaps a drawing or two – and were to put them away somewhere safe, as keepsakes for the future?

It is this ability to shape the way we will be remembered that makes time capsules so appealing. Time capsules have a storied past, stretching back to the first known literary work, The Epic of Gilgamesh, which opens with a hunt for a manuscript hidden in the walls of Uruk. The great pyramids of Egypt and Mexico are also time capsules of a sort, containing relics of ancient eras. The ruins at Pompeii, buried in ash for more than 1,600 years, formed an unintentional but impeccable time capsule depicting city life at the height of the Roman Empire. The modern time capsule was born amid preparations for the 1939 World’s Fair in New York City, when Westinghouse constructed an 800-pound metal ball, which it then filled with everyday items and buried underground. More recently, a satellite time capsule named KEO, to be sent into space for 50,000 years, has been proposed but not yet launched.

Building on this colorful heritage, the Yahoo! Time Capsule sets out to collect a portrait of the world – a single global image composed of millions of individual contributions. This time capsule is defined not by the few items a curator decides to include, but by the items submitted by every human on earth who wishes to participate. We hope to reach a truly global expression of life on earth – nuanced, diverse, beautiful and ugly, thrilling and terrifying, touching and rude, serious and absurd, frank, honest, human.

The Time Capsule itself is realized digitally so that the maximum number of people can have access. It is organized around ten themes, chosen to illuminate different corners of the human experience. The ten themes are: Love, Sorrow, Anger, Faith, Beauty, Fun, Past, Hope, Now, and You. Each theme harbors an open-ended question: What do you love? What makes you sad? What makes you angry? What do you believe in? What’s beautiful? What’s fun? What do you remember? What is your wish? Describe your world. Who are you? People respond to these questions in five simple ways – with words, pictures, videos, sounds, and drawings.

The aesthetic of the Time Capsule is that of a ball of thread, spinning like a globe, its shifting surface entirely composed of words and pictures submitted by people around the world. The thread ball concept relates to threads of memory and threads of time, where threads are taken to be any continuous and self-consistent narrative strand. When the Time Capsule opens, it displays the 100 most recent contributions, which form the spinning globe. The ten themes orbit the globe in a pinwheel pattern. At any moment, any individual tile can be clicked, causing the globe to fall away and the selected tile to expand, revealing detailed information about the tile and the person who created it. Using a search interface, viewers can specify the population they wish to see, exploring such demographics as “men in their 20s from New York City”, and “Iraqi women who submitted drawings in response to the question: What do you love?”. There are an infinite number of ways to slice the data, and each resulting slice then becomes its own thread, which can be browsed independently, tile by tile, like a filmstrip.

The contribution process is designed to be simple and universal, using minimal gestures to create words and drawings, and to upload files. Though translated into ten languages, there are very few textual instructions anywhere in the piece, so the experience is necessarily one of exploration and discovery. A clock counts down constantly in the bottom left corner, approaching the moment the Time Capsule will close.

The presiding message of the Time Capsule is: “One World. Many Voices.” The piece attempts simultaneously to express the differences between individuals, and to illustrate the shared ground between people of all ages, races, backgrounds and cultures.

For lunch we had several dishes, pansit, grilled pork, sea shells, pupulo - seaweed, sinigang na bangus, afritada, leche plan, sago at fulaman, etc. It was a sumptuous meal, a tribute for my homecoming. I did not enjoy the meal though, I enjoyed the company of my 'kins. The family of Manong Jimmy also came. Rodney, Umpong, Nannan, and other relatives came to help nanay cook lunch.

We made use of the tea set that I purchased from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Thanks to Arnel for polishing the teapot and tray. Some liked the tea others sipped. In this video Yanna sippe severala times but at the latter part of the film she vomitted. Ahh kids, they just wanna have fun, I did had great fun!

This lomboy in Iloko or duhat in Tagalog is a small tree. It was purchased by Junjun at the Manila Seedlilng Bank and nay and tay grew it. An attraction during summer because it is so small yet it bears so many big duhat fruits. The 'kins climb and had fun with the dwarf duhat. We are extra cautious since the road is close by.

Future cameramen, most of them wants to be taking the video and pictures. You could only tell be careful! for them not to drop the camera. So be patient and get yourself an aspirin in case you suffer from double vision and diziness watching this video.

I left the camera and so they took the iniative to do their own filming, so this is their output whoever was the one responsible, am not sure.
